I've recently built a gaming pc and when it came time to add storage my budget was pretty much all spent and the storage economy is ridiculous thanks to AI so I've been trying to find a good cheap source for shucking drives.
Shucking is basically buying a commercial product that happens to have a drive inside it and taking it apart to obtain said drive for cheaper than it would be just buying the drive itself.
I came across the Sandisk IBI, a personal photo "cloud" device that Sandisk released in 2019 and discontinued in 2024. After discontinuing the IBI, the server that coordinated connecting to the device from you phone was shut down and thus the "personal photo cloud" functionality ceased to function unless a setting was enabled for LAN-only mode before the servers went offline. So ironically a device to reduce reliance on the cloud and maintain your own data on your own property was bricked by its link to a cloud service being taken offline!
Anyway in my search for affordable 2TB+ drives I came across a listing for one of these devices that was listed as new in box so for only $30 I took a risk. Let's pop it open and see if it was worth it and if I end up with a working drive!
