Why do you need an ice maker? The same reason you have a breadmaker, soup maker or washing machine. It's an appliance that performs a task faster and more efficiently than the manual method. Ice cubes take about 3 hours to make in a tray, making 12-16 cubes on average. A machine will make 9 cubes in about 8 minutes. As always, if you prefer the manual method there's no obligation to do anything different.
