In September 2023, CSX Transportation’s Louisville & Nashville Heritage Unit, GE ES44AH no. 1850, visited Tennessee for the first time, leading a coal train south over the KD and Etowah Subdivisions en route to Cartersville, Georgia, where it would deliver the black diamonds to Plant Bowen. It was a historic run since both subdivisions were once part of L&N’s original route between Cincinnati and Atlanta. What made the trip even more special was that the locomotive could be photographed alongside original L&N signals dating back to the 1920s, the same signals many famous steam locomotives and passenger trains once passed by daily, nearly 100 years ago.
There to capture the moment were our very own Drayton Blackgrove (Marketing Team) and Josh Singletary (Product Support Team), who chased the train between Oak Ridge (Edgemore) and Etowah, Tennessee, where the locomotive was dropped from the consist for the L&N Historical Society’s annual convention. CSX graciously let the organization document the Heritage Unit from within the yard at Etowah. Being one of the youngest members of the Society, Josh took detailed photos for our Product Development team while there, allowing us to include the 1850 in our second offering of CSX Heritage Units last year.
