Charlotte has a small but growing rail system which includes light rail and streetcar. They intersect in downtown and have extensions under construction. The Blue Line light rail is 9 miles long and has another 9 miles under construction, due to open in March, 2018. The streetcar also is being extended. When Phase 2 opens the old style streetcars will be replaces with modern streetcars.
