Charles Manson Feb. 25, 1985 Berkeley, California "Tune in drop out" Complete Interview 90. 7 KALX FM. The photo is from Manson in the communications and interview room at Vacaville 1985. The recording comes from that interview room by state prison.
The station also aired in March in identification spots for the breaks in the radio commercials recorded by Manson where he announced, "Hi, I'm Charlie Manson and you're listening to KALX in Berkeley." The Manson ID spots only aired for a week in March 1985.
On February 25, 1985 KALX reporters Arnold Woods and Keven Kennedy interviewed Charles Manson at the Vacaville State Medical Facility in Vacaville. KALX aired the interview a month later in March, amidst protests outside KALX 90.7 FM Berkeley studios.
During the interview, Manson claimed, "I was Elvis Presley before he was" and discussed being labeled a hippie by the media. "I'm not a hippie," he said. "I was a beatnik down in Venice pounding on bongos and reciting poetry in the 50s." Manson also talked about his reluctance to be involved in the recording industry. "I had a record career. I didn't want a record career. I just got out of one prison. I didn't want to get into another one."
