A live performance of one of the most beautiful pieces ever written for piano.
The Alcotts is the third movement from the epic Concord Sonata. It is dedicated to the philosopher Bronson Alcott and the beautiful white house he lived in with his family in Concord Village. This house was also the house in the novel 'Little Women'. Ives paints a picture of Beth playing at the fifth Symphony and the old Scotch Airs through juxtaposing the recognizable theme of Beethoven's fifth and all its grandeur and weightiness alongside the simplicity of the wee scotch airs. The surprising and celestial bells are a the philosophical moments, hinting at a world and existence beyond.
