For the contest, we had to make a multi-fandom video with a unique theme, so for my theme I chose ‘characters who struggled to come out to unsupportive family members’ (a bit long winded, I know).

I decided to focus on just 4 characters and their family members, some have just one family member who was unsupportive, and some have multiple. I also tried to show at the end how even though some people were unsupportive, they still had friends/boyfriends/girlfriends who were supportive and fought for them.

Characters:
~Callie Torres (Grey’s Anatomy) and her parents (predominantly her father, but I also featured some clips with her mother), Callie’s father struggled to accept her at first, as her being gay went against his beliefs, however, he eventually came to accept her sexuality and even stood up to his wife in order to dance with his daughter at her wedding.

~Will Horton (Days of our Lives) and his parents (again, predominantly his father). Whilst Will’s mum was shocked at first, she soon came around, unlike his father, who took a little longer to accept Will.

~Emily Fields (Pretty Little Liars) and her mother. Emily’s mum was at first ‘sickened’ by Emily coming out, but eventually came to accept her daughter.

~ S a n t a n a L o p e z (G l e e) and her grandmother. S a n t a n a finally plucked up the courage to tell her grandmother that she is gay, but her grandmother refused to accept it. It is unknown whether she still feels like this.

Voiceovers:

S a n t a n a: ”I’m the same person I was a minute ago.

Lucas: “I saw them kissing each other, right there in the middle of the Horton Town Square for everyone to see”

Callie “You think you can pray away the gay. You can’t prey away the gay.”

Pam: “I don’t even know who you are anymore”

Grandmother: “The sin isn’t in the thing, it’s in the scandal when people talk about it out loud”
S a n t a n a: “So you’re saying it would have been better if I had kept this a secret?”

Lucia: “Do you know how devastating it is to love a child and know you won’t see that child in heaven?”
Callie: “I’m your daughter”

Lucas: “I still love you”
Will: “You still love me?”
Lucas: “It came out wrong”
Will: “No it didn’t. You meant you still love me, even though you don’t want me to be gay”

S a n t a n a: “Everyone’s gonna know now. Because of you”
F i n n: ”The whole school already knows and they don’t care”
S a n t a n a: “Not just the school, you idiot – everyone.”

Emily: “I’m glad you’re ok with it”
Pam: “I’m not ok with it. The whole thing makes me sick.”

Lucas: “He’s struggling to accept who he is. He’s not ready for this.”
Sonny: “I think you’re not ready for this. You’re ok with him being gay, as long as he doesn’t do anything about it.”

Arizona: “I love your daughter, and I protect the things I love. She’s who you raised her to be.”

Carlos: “Here I am, to have this dance, with my daughter.”

?: “Girls like you are a challenge, you just need the right guy to straighten you out. Easy girls, I’m just trying to make her normal”
B r i t t a n y: “She is normal.”

Pam: “I still don’t understand, but I love you. You are my child. I’m so sorry”
