The cash Isa allowance will be cut from April 2027 to encourage people to invest in stocks and shares instead, chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in the Autumn Budget. However, Lifetime Isas (Lisas) will also be replaced by a new type of account, and total Isa allowances will be frozen.
People will only be able to pay up to £12,000 a year into a cash Isa, down from the current £20,000. The overall Isa allowance will stay at £20,000, meaning that in practice £8,000 of it will be earmarked for investing in a stocks-and-shares Isa. In a confusing exception, savers aged over 65 will still be able to invest their full £20,000 allowance into cash Isas.
