In 2012, I built an entire tea house from scratch. Every element was made by hand, except for the central element, a tea bowl (or chawan) that I bought on eBay and engraved with a NASA worm. NYC ceramics master JJPEET was there to call me out. Since then I’ve dedicated myself to mastering making ceramic tea bowls.
This is a video of me making a bowl with the pinch pot method that my master (JJPEET) taught me. The tea bowl that I'm always trying to make ( my north star) is the one Sen no Rikyū commissioned Chōjirō to make over 500 years ago. I chose to dedicate the necessary hours to perfecting this method. I’m 8,700 hours in.
We’ve all worked hard together on this Wear Tester Journey work with some rules and guidelines under which we make our art. We establish our own rules to keep us from going crazy with the endless choices that the universe provides (the existential abyss). We use structure to keep us in line so we can finish the damn project. Now is the time to throw it all out of the fucking window. Find your own voice. Stick with it and proceed down the road.
