Rangamati is located in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region of southeastern Bangladesh near the border with Myanmar. It is currently a restricted area, a permit to visit must be obtained by all non-Bangladesh citizens. The Chakma people are the largest ethnic group in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region and many live in Rangamati District. Their ethnicity is closely linked with the peoples of East Asia.
