The dancehall duo is shining proof that a sum can be bigger than its parts. In the early 90s the combination of Chaka’s gruff delivery and Plier’s sweet tones produced a series of international hits, including the Sly & Robbie produced “Murder She Wrote”. Here, the somewhat reluctant interviewees reveal positivity, spirituality and generosity as the key to their partnership. Jamaica’s most successful female producer, Sonia Pottinger was responsible for some of the finest vocal performances ever committed to vinyl. In this 1995 interview the charming but formidable “Miss P” recalls with affection the many outstanding musicians she worked with: “they had love…they shared”. The secret to her recordings? “The joyful spirit in the studio”. It was her “maternal instinct”, she believes, that enabled her to work so successfully with female artists like Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths. She emphasizes (and regrets the loss of) the “learning process” in the recording studio, reveals her love of drums, explains the art of getting radio play, the evolution of dub, and finally, expresses considerable pride in becoming the first woman to record gospel music. Steve Barrow asks the questions and Don Letts keeps the subject in focus.

Baaba Maal is one of the finest singers in the world, and hes currently on brilliant live form - as shown by those memorable impromptu collaborations with anyone from Toumani Diabate to Franz Ferdinand at the Africa Express shows. Yet he hasnt recorded a new album for seven years, which presumably explains this limited-edition retrospective acoustic live set. Its taken from performances over the past 10 years, many featuring the exquisite kora work of the late Kaouding Cissoko, and includes some impressive tracks, from that lyrical favourite Baayo to a hypnotic, improvised workout on the harsh-edged Farba, previously only released on cassette in Africa. Then theres the gently charming, kora-backed Fanta, the well-worn and more slushy Cherie, and a virtuoso collaboration with Jamaican guitar hero Ernest Ranglin on Koni, which they performed together on Maals last live recording, nine years ago. Its currently available only on vinyl or as a download from baabamaal.tv, but is well worth checking out as we wait for something new. Those Africa Express collaborations would make a great start.

Was Rudolph “Ruddy” Redwood the originator of the remix? In this mid-90s interview he recalls the serious of fortunate events resulting in Jamaica’s (and the world’s) first “version”. The story begins with the ex-jeweller’s S-R-S – or Supreme Ruler of Sound, Spanish Town’s top ranking sound system. Ruddy would preview acetates for the legendary Duke Reid. Then one night he played an accidental instrumental of the Paragons’ “On the Beach”. The result was musical history. The affable “Mr. Midnight” remembers the night in question, sheds some interesting light on the nature of the Duke himself, and as an added bonus, reveals the secret of building a proper speaker box. Steve Barrow asks the questions and Don Letts and Rick Elgood do the shooting.
