Welcome back to "That 1870s Homestead"! I'm Rachel, and today I’m tackling my morning chores early to beat the summer heat. With temperatures soaring into the mid-90s, I'm trying to get all my garden tasks done by 10:30 AM. Join me as I spray on some bug repellent and head out to pick strawberries and blueberries, water the garden, and tend to our adorable baby chickens. We've recently mixed our baby meat chickens with the laying hens, and it's going surprisingly well—they’re all getting along great!
I’m also dealing with the heat by planning to move the meat chickens into their own tractor once they’ve fully feathered. In the garden, I'm pulling out the broccoli plants and saving the greens for canning, which has become a staple in our new eating routine. I’ll share my tips on how to make the most of your garden produce, including how to use the often-overlooked broccoli leaves.
As I move from chore to chore, I'll talk about managing the farm stand, balancing all these tasks, and ensuring that our farm operates smoothly—even during a heatwave. I’ll show you some of the beautiful blooms in our garden, from bachelor's buttons to delphiniums, and share a few tricks on growing and pollinating peppers.
