Interested in jumping straight to a single-crochet stitch without having to place a bed of chain stitches first? In this stitch tutorial, I show you how to create a foundation single crochet stitch (FSC st) that is ideal for creating standalone single crochet stitches.
The uses for this stitch are endless, but I find it is the most helpful when I want to create a project to specific measurements, like a square base of a basket for a specific opening, a blanket that is a perfect size for the bed, or a round frame project (coming soon!). All of these projects require that you crochet to an exact size, but we all know that a row of chains and a row of single crochet stitches can vary greatly in size. This stitch will help eliminate that issue and allow you to get the sizing right on your first go!

Foundation Single Crochet Stitch Steps:
1. Attach yarn to crochet hook using a slip knot. CH 2.
2. Working in the 2 full loops of 1st CH st, insert crochet hook.
3. Yarn over and drop 1 loop *take note of this step, as we will be working in these two dropped loops after we complete the 1st FSC st.*
4. Yarn over and drop the 2 remaining loops on your crochet hook. You have completed your first FSC st.
5. Working backwards (as if you have turned your work, insert crochet hook in the two * loops above.
6. Yarn over and drop 1 loop *take note of this step, as we will be working in these two dropped loops.*
7. Yarn over and drop the 2 remaining loops on your crochet hook. You have completed another FSC st.
8. Repeat steps 5 - 7 to work additional FSC st.
