A fire burns in the coal mines beneath Centralia, PA. Over the course of 70 years, this fire has continued to burn, slowly reducing the city which once lived atop it into an abandoned ruin.
Often, we think of fire as something quick, something fleeting, a powerful force which might spring up at any moment. But fire is slow, too, creeping beneath the surface. Fire is embers, toxic fumes, greenhouse gasses. And it is trauma, it is our generational systems of violence. And one day, the things that burn within us will crack open the earth and spill out as flame as ash as memories.
"It's not our fault!" we will say. "Please spare us!"
But we will still have to live in the world that fire has made.
