Celtic Poets and Google’s New AI Chatbot Called Bard, the Rival to Chat GPT
Is Google’s new AI chatbot ‘Bard’ named after professional Celtic storytellers and poets? While flicking through the news recently, I came across an article about Google’s new AI chatbot that is aimed at challenging Chat GPT, and I was immediately struck by its name: Bard.
A bard in Celtic cultures is a professional storyteller, poet, music composer, oral historian and genealogist. They were often employed by patrons, such as clan chieftains, leaders and even Monarchs. Bards would often commemorate acts of bravery on the battlefield through epic poems and songs, celebrating heroes and their actions. The Brythonic bard Aneirin created aa epic poem called Y Gododdin, written in Old Welsh and Middle Welsh, that may contain the first reference to King Arthur for instance.
They wouldn’t just create these however. Performance was key to the role of a bard. They had to be able to hold a crowd. They were similar to actors on a stage today in a way. Bards also served as historians and genealogists for the group or clan they belonged to. From important events in history to entire family trees and genealogies to even laws, the bard held vast amount of knowledge. As Celtic cultures didn’t write a lot down, Bards would have to hold incredible amounts of information in their head. They used memorization techniques based around using rhymes and other devices to help.
The English word Bard is a loan word from the Celtic languages: from the ancient Gaulish word bardo- ('bard, poet'), to equivalents found in: Middle Irish: bard and Scottish Gaelic: bàrd ('bard, poet'), Middle Welsh: bardd ('singer, poet'), Middle Breton: barz ('minstrel'), Old Cornish: barth ('jester'). Bard is also a cognate with the Sanskrit word meaning gṛṇā́ti ('calls, praise').
