Sometime in 2015 research I was conducting for personal reasons led me down a rabbit hole. This particular rabbit hole was specifically shaped like our DNA and how not only have “scientist” been experimenting with altering it in both humans and animals but it was now essentially something you could buy ‘over-the-counter’. In both amazement and horror, I uncovered things I had never known existed such as the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing tech that essentially let anyone who had $300 and could get their hands on it to edit DNA right down to the germline (which simply means these changes would be passed on to future generations.) I’m thinking all this time “surely I’m not the only person in the world who has read the sci-fi / horror novels, watched the sci-fi / horror movies and very easily determined that every time humans play God, the result is particularly disastrous (watch the 2024 movie “The Substance” for an interesting take on this idea.) I think this concept is probably pretty easy to validate based on human history in the real world as well. Not saying there can’t be upsides like eradicating disease and the like, but if history has taught us anything, cutting edge technological advancements generally end up in the hands of the greedy and power hungry that would sell their human brothers and sisters out without a second thought.
As things often go for me, the lyrics were just my way of working some of this out in my own head and hoping maybe 1 or 2 other people might be intrigued enough to do their own research. It’s more often than I’d like that I find myself seeing a headline and reciting the lyrics as I watch our future dystopia unfolding before our very eyes.
