Toyota Celica GT Rally was released by Gremlin in 1990, for the Atari ST, Amiga and DOS - it may have come out for other platforms but i'm not 100% sure. It's a rally game which takes place over three locations with ten sections each.
Visually the game looks very good with some bright colourful visuals and the in-car graphics are very detailed. The 3D effect of the road isn't too bad, however I would say that at times it can be difficult to see the road on some of the more hillier sections with the roadside terrain popping up all of the time and definitely when the rain / sandstorm and snow effects are on. Maybe this is intentional because Rally racing is known for driving over challenging terrain.
It also has a pretty cool feature in the co-driver who talks to you throughout the race, Unfortunately by default he will only say left or right, this means you have to practice the course beforehand and setup his commands. It's a nice feature to have as this is what real rally drivers would do, but I would have liked the co-driver to be a bit smarter by himself so you can know whether it is an easy left or not.
My major problem with the game comes with the car handling. It takes a lot of practice to get even remotely good at this game because it always feels like one of the axel's on the car is broken and so constantly veers to the edge of the road. Whilst it may look like in this forthcoming footage that I am playing very well but I assure you that I am constantly fighting the car just to keep it on the road. The car slides around so much, even on the tarmac on the English rally, that unless you are super cautious you'll slide off the road and thus get a 20 second penalty. This dosen't feel like any car that i have ever driven and frankly I don't think it would pass its MOT and surely that's not a great way for Toyota to promote themselves. There are a few optons to adjust the steering but it's not much of an improvement.
Unfortunately these bad controls really hamper this game and to be honest in recording the video for this I was actually relived when I finished 10th and was told that only the top 10 drivers can go onto Finland, because after an hour I was really not enjoying it any more.
If you're interested in seeing more Atari ST videos then feel free to subscribe or check out my playlists, I also do lots of other consoles.
