About the National Academy of Engineering

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is considered among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology.

About the Inductee

Younan Xia, the newest Bloomberg Distinguished Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is a leading researcher whose work has transformed how we design, synthesize, and apply nanomaterials. His research focuses on controlling the synthesis of nanomaterials with precisely tailored properties for applications in medicine, electronics, and energy conversion.

Xia also holds an appointment in the School of Medicine’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, where he developed nanostructured materials for cancer diagnosis and treatment, targeted drug delivery, surgical and trauma wound management, and tissue repair and regeneration. The National Academy of Engineering elected him for his “research and leadership in the invention and rational development of advanced materials for nanomedicine and regenerative medicine.”
