The West Indian Day Parade is taking place in Brooklyn on Labor Day, and attendees will no doubt hear Soca music blasting throughout the day. Soca is an upbeat style of dance music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago. Trini artist Machel Montano is credited with bringing Soca to global popularity, and now the Brooklyn Public Library has organized a new exhibit, 'Machel Montano: Journey of a Soca King, (bklynlibrary.org/exhibitions/machel-montano-journey) ' which is on view through at the Central Library branch through September 12. And on September 3, the library is hosting a screening of the documentary, Like Ah Boss: Journey of a Soca King. Natiba Guy-Clement is the curator and director of special collections at the Center for Brooklyn History and she joins us to discuss the exhibit and the importance of Soca music in Caribbean culture.
