Exploring the work of Elsie Widdowson (Nutrition) through to Dr Ann Prentice (Human Nutrition Research) & Dr Susan Jebb (Diet and Obesity Research), part of the MRC series to celebrate 100 years of life-changing discoveries.
In 1946, Dietitian Elise Widdowson confirmed the safety of wartime rationing. She was a British #nutrition researcher who worked with Robert McCance to confirm the safety of the addition of #vitamins to food and war-time rationing in Britain during World War II.
Widowson and Mccacne were co-authors of The Composition of Foods, published in 1940 by the MRC, a book which detailed the basis for modern nutritional thinking. Widowson's work into infant nutrition also led to revised UK standards for breast milk substitutes in the 1980s.
Dr Ann Prentice is the Director of MRC Human Nutrition #Research. The main purpose of the unit is to try and improve the health of the nation through nutrition. It includes a number of departments working on a variety of subjects including work on fat metabolism at the cellular level, food intolerance, and work on bone health.
