Driving a 40-ton rig is more than just a skill, it’s a responsibility that takes weeks and sometimes months of practice to ensure safety for everyone on the roads.
That’s one of the reasons that the U.S Department of Transportation removed 13 Pennsylvania CDL schools from the national registry as part of a nationwide crackdown on fraud in the industry, eliminating the bad apples from the bunch and keeping dangerous drivers off the road.
"You definitely want to get the bad apples out of there because they're basically giving away CDLs, but they're either doing it by not properly training and just passing somebody," said Thomas Goehrig, the Director of CDL Training at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, "Or they're bringing someone who doesn't properly speak English and get them to somehow get to pass their CDL test. That just puts a dangerous driver on the road. It gives the industry a kind of a bad name, a bad reputation.”
