The goal of the Integrated Highway Prototype 2 is to advance the basic travel use case using the CARMA Ecosystem, thus furthering the capabilities of cooperative automated driving systems (C-ADS), enhancing infrastructure efficiency, and ultimately leading to a reduction in traffic congestion. Through simulation in the open source tools CARLA and SUMO, the project showed the effectiveness of three cooperative algorithms—platooning, cooperative merging, and speed harmonization. Closed-track testing showed the feasibility of implementing these algorithms on a mixed fleet of C-ADS vehicles.
