A playthrough of Data East's 1990 sports game for the NES, Caveman Games.
We know that the modern Olympics were based on the ancient Greek Olympic games, but what if the Greeks drew inspiration from something even older? Dynamix posed this very question in establishing the premise of Caveman Ugh-lympics, a 1988 Commodore 64 multi-event, competitive sports game set in the Stone Age that was ported to Dos in 1989 and to the NES, as Caveman Games, in 1990.
In Caveman Games, you compete in a series of six events as one of six competitors (five cavemen and one cavelady), each with their own specific strengths and weaknesses. The games include clubbing (a 1v1 fight with clubs), the mate toss (like the hammer throw, but your spouse is the ball-and-chain), the dino vault (pole vaulting over a hungry dinosaur), fire making (rubbing two sticks together), dino racing (hurdles, but done while riding on a dinosaur), and saber racing (fleeing from a sabertooth tiger).
The prehistoric reimaginings of modern games are entertaining, and the controls are good, but it's the humor that gives Caveman Games its spark. Everything about it is firmly tongue-in-cheek in its tone, and most of it is legitimately funny. You can distract your opponent by pointing at something imaginary behind him before cracking him in the head. You can give yourself a leg up in a race by feeding the other guy to a hungry sabertooth tiger. Or you can even challenge yourself by playing as Vincent, a nerdy Neanderthal whose smarts fail to provide any meaningful advantage.
The NES version's presentation has been cut back from what was seen on the C64 and PC, but it still looks great and makes for a fun time between a friends.

Since the game never saw an international release, Ive subtitled the video with my own English translation of the games dialog and text.
Following in the footsteps of Street Fighter II Movie (https://youtu.be/LrZPAXBs4N0) and Fox Hunt (https://youtu.be/Ffo_aADreQs), this FMV-based Mega Man game was the third interactive movie that Capcom released on 32-bit consoles.
Super Adventure Rockman is based on the characters of Mega Man 1-3, and its built on the back of a three episode OVA series that Capcom commissioned specifically for the game. The story was also later adapted for Archies Mega Man comic series.
Taking place in 20XX, the story begins as an earthquake deep in the Amazon reveals the mysterious ruins of a 20,000 year old civilization. The ruins start emitting dangerous waves of electromagnetic radiation, and Dr. Wily seizes the chance to claim the power as his own in yet another misguided attempt at world domination. Roll has already been affected, and if Mega Man doesn’t stop the evil doctor, all humans and robots will be wiped out within two weeks.
The gameplay follows the choose your own adventure template. As the FMV clips play, youll be presented with quicktime events and your choice of paths to take whenever you hit branch points, and your inputs at these moments determine which clip youll see next. You also encounter enemies at certain points, and youll fight them in gallery shooting minigames (think Lethal Enforcers) that encourage you to make use of the weapons youve scavenged from the battered bodies of your fallen foes.
Its a neat relic from a time when multi-disc games came packed full of heavily compressed video clips, and though the gameplay is nothing special and theres little in the way of replayability, Super Adventure Rockman is a fun way to experience Mega Man from a new angle.
The quality of the animation is fairly cheesy but servicable - its in keeping with what youd expect from a typical VHS OVA release - but I loved how closely the style adheres to the look of Keiji Inafunes character art from Mega Mans NES era of games.
Super Adventure Rockman also bears the dubious distinction of being the only game that Inafune has ever officially struck from the series canon: he apparently hated how far it strayed from the tone of the games with its fixation on death and its generally bleak tone. I suppose thats his prerogative, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.
