In April 2024, off-duty Cleveland Police Detective Donald Kopchak (then on an ATF task force) and former Portage County Deputy Daniel LaJack (then on a DEA task force) were drinking at Buzzard’s Roost Tavern (also called Buzzards Roost Sports Bar) in Hinckley Township, Medina County, Ohio.
They confronted Yonas Bokredingil, a 41-year-old legal immigrant from Eritrea (or Ethiopia, per some reports) living in Texas with a valid commercial driver’s license. He was a truck driver in the area, minding his own business, ordering a drink, and watching the NFL draft.
The officers questioned his immigration status without evidence, identified themselves as federal agents, demanded ID, and accused him of being undocumented (and in one account, potentially a security risk). LaJack reportedly told him he wasn’t free to leave and stepped outside to “check” his status. When Bokredingil tried to leave or the situation escalated, Kopchak physically restrained him—muscled him outside, tackled him, put him in a leg lock/chokehold (disputed), and held him on the ground until Brunswick police arrived.
