Roman Catholics, Orthodox Church members, and Mormons all make extra biblical claims to authority, apostolic succession, perpetual authority, infallibility, and modern day revelation. The Roman Catholic Church claims its authority is derived from the Scriptures, Tradition, Papal Infallibility, and the Magisterium, which are all equal in authority. The Orthodox Church claims authority from the Scriptures, Tradition, Church Fathers, Creeds, Ecumenical Councils, Holy Fathers, and a perpetual authority and infallibility on doctrine. Both the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church (of which there are different sects and jurisdictions) claim apostolic succession and that the Holy Spirit leads them; they both also claim to be the one true Church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, aka the Mormons, also believe they are the one true Church and claim they are led by the Holy Spirit. They believe their authority comes from the Bible, the Standard Works (the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Doctrine and Covenants), Melchizedek Priesthood, modern day revelation, and modern day apostles and prophets. According to Mormonism, the Melchizedek Priesthood is God's restored authority, giving the LDS Church alone the right to preach the gospel with divine authority and perform saving ordinances including valid baptisms, conferring the Gift of the Holy Ghost, priesthood ordinations, and temple ordinances. They believe this authority was lost after the apostles and restored through Joseph Smith, making the LDS Church the only church with God's authorized priesthood today.
The doctrine of Sola Scriptura teaches that the inspired Scriptures are the only infallible and ultimate authority for the Christian faith and practice. God's Word is "living and active" (Hebrews 4:12), fully inspired by God and sufficient to equip believers "for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Christians are not called to accept teachings blindly but to imitate the Bereans, who "examined the Scriptures daily" to test what they heard (Acts 17:11). The apostle Paul likewise appealed to reasoned biblical judgment, saying, "Judge for yourselves what I say" (1 Corinthians 10:15), and instructed believers to "rightly handle the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15). Scripture consistently points God's people back to His written Word as the standard by which every doctrine is to be examined.
Because truth matters, believers must carefully evaluate every teaching, tradition, and religious claim in light of Scripture. Paul warns Christians not to be taken captive by human philosophy and empty deception that is not according to Christ (Colossians 2:8). John commands believers to "test the spirits" because many false prophets have gone into the world (1 John 4:1–3), and Paul gives one of the strongest warnings in the New Testament that even if an angel from heaven preaches a different gospel, that message is to be rejected (Galatians 1:6–9). These commands only make sense if God's written Word is the objective standard by which all claims, traditions, and spiritual authorities are tested.
