Our Master Instructors, like Doug Nepodal here, often have very clever ways of making a point about technique. "Taming the arc" is crucial for the kettlebell clean and snatch, and catching the bell in this manner would be impossible if Doug wasn't taming its arc properly. You see that the bell's path is directed upward, not outward. It's close and controlled. \m/ Enjoy.
