I took way longer than I expected to get this one out. I got stuck in a creative rut for a while there, trying to wrap things up for RED PLANET II (among other things).
I'm really glad I got to finally make use of that funky guitar sound. I've never really had a good opportunity to use it until now.
Also, to keep close to the original's funkiness, I used my hammond organ plugin again for the second time (the first being in my Sorcerian cover). Though I think its a bit more subtle here than it was in my cover of Pillar Demons.
Overall, I've tried to keep everything real close to the original, only sort of deviating slightly towards the last 1/3 of the cover.
I also decided to try something a little different during the mastering phase. I think this cover came out sounding a little bit "brighter" than my previous covers.
For the most part, I had a good time working on this one... until I somehow tore/pulled the muscle in the arch of my left foot (yeah, I don't know how I did either). It was right at the end of my video recording session too. Definitely not a fun way to end a session, let me tell you =(.

The (new & improved) opening track of my 2014 album, RISEN!
With how nice The Shores of Destiny had turned out on the On Impulse album, I really wanted to make sure that one of its inspirations and namesakes (the other being Change Destiny) got the remake that it deserved!
I was very happy about being able to salvage the original intro guitar part (0:00 - 0:48). At first I was worried that the take was going to be too noisy and nasty-sounding to use. After all, back around 10 years ago (...well okay, all the way up until 2022), I recorded like some kinda barbarian, recording DI tracks straight into my motherboards line-in. The Strat-Era of my music-making adventures was especially rough though; mobo/PC noise + the normal noise of single-coil pickups on my Strat... they were dark times indeed.
Thankfully, with a bit of EQ and some finesse, the original haunting, yet magical intro guitar line gets to open up an album once more! (I also added a couple of synths to join the guitar in this intro.)
Ive kept the lead guitar part very close to the original melody. However, I did change up the rhythm guitars at 1:45. Back then, I was happy with just having rhythm play normal power-chords while the leads did their thing. Coming back to this song 9 years later, there was certainly room to spice things up! Playing this new bit was fun on both the bass and guitar. After that, I go back into good ol power-chords to close out the song.
Speaking of bass, I decided to try a couple of different things this time. For the longest time, I would usually use both my pickups on my PJ bass at %100, or Id roll off the Precision pickups to about %50 and leave the Jazz pickups at full. This time, I decided to just go full Precision bass, and rolled off the Jazz pickups completely.
From what Ive seen and heard, a lot of studio guys seem to prefer working with P-basses since theyre a lot less fuss, and sit in most mixes just fine.
The other thing I did was mix in the raw, DI bass track alongside the amped-up signal-chain. I also wound up throwing on a tape-sim VST to saturate and compress the DI a little. I feel that the saturation managed to give it a little more mid-presence. Its subtle, but I think it really helped the bass get on very nicely with the rhythm guitars.
Now, for the most notable change for this remake: piano and strings! I started with placing the strings down, before moving on to the piano. When it came to piano, I just really went with feel, placing down notes almost kinda hap-hazardly. I loved this new piano part so much that I used it as the new outro for this song. I also threw in one of my favorite synth patches to add a bit of sparkle and shine to the piano part.
I think that these new strings and piano parts really elevate the song. Once more, this truly feels like what this song shouldve been back when I first made it.
Anyhow, I hope you all enjoyed this remake of Leaving Shore as much as I do! Going off of this, Id say that the RISEN remake is off to a wonderful start! The Decade of DAR Tour has only YET begun to set sail! ~DAR

Slight detour, as I really really wanted to cover/extend this. It was one of those situations where upon hearing the original, I immediately could hear the new riffs in my head. Also, this one technically has the honor of being the channels first commission! Many thanks goes out to Niko for requesting and sponsoring this one! I very much enjoyed jamming out to this one m/!
For those unaware, the original Decisive Dance was basically a 10-second loop. Ironically enough, the last song that I had extended like this was also a Spidey cover (Waterfront Warehouse)! While looking into the song, I wound up discovering that the Genesis version had basically combined it with Heated Battle as well. The two just fit so well together, I just HAD to throw in Heated Battle in the beginning and end of the cover!
When coming up with all the new riffs, I made sure to try my best to stay faithful to the mood and feeling of the original.
Im actually a few days late on this one, had a lot happen this past week: discovering the perfect guitar pick (never knew I needed the Jazz III picks in my life til now), experiments with soldering and electronics, and even a case of food poisoning. Its certainly been an adventurous week. Took me a little longer too, since originally I had estimated that the cover would only be slightly over 3 minutes, and instead it wound up becoming 7 and a half minutes!
So picking apart things I had done for this cover, something else that wound up being time consuming was that I decided to go nuts with the synths. After mapping out the notes in MIDI, I wound up rendering out 11 different sounds/synth-patches. From there, I went and layered them all together. Quite happy with how the synths turned out, both the main background synth, as well as the lead synth for the Heated Battle parts.
Speaking of Heated Battle, its been forever (ok, so since a little before this time last year) since I got to use one of my guitar slides! As I listened to the synth in the original, I immediately thought, oh this would sound awesome with a slide! and so I busted out my wonderful chrome slide. Which actually surprised me, since my glass slide had always been my favorite to use for recording. Thinking back on it, the last time the chrome one had gotten some love was back on Hypernova from my HORIZONS album! Really loved how the synth and slide-guitar combination sounded (0:47, 6:37).
As for the rest of the leads, Ill keep things short, since I could spend forever typing about each of the new riffs. I had so much damn fun noodling and riffing around on this one. Its always a wonderful feeling when a song/cover just really meshes and gels well with my playing. My new favorite pick certainly made things even more fun too (feels like Im effortlessly gliding across the strings). One lead part I particularly liked was when I did the tremolo-picking at 4:17 (also really liked playing the groovy section before it). During the trem-picking, giving a boost to my Reverb and Delay Sends/aux-channels had really nailed the sound and tone that I had in my head.
Lastly, something that I did a little differently on this cover was sending my bass track off to an aux-channel, and throwing on an EQ (to roll off everything below ~500hz), and a tubescreamer. The distortion isnt particularly aggressive, but I felt like it helped the bass stand out a bit better.

At long last, F-Zero makes an appearance on the channel! Many thanks to all of you that voted for it during the last COVER BATTLEGROUNDS (placing 3rd in SlaughterSphere). Also, shout-out to ren for nominating this track in particular!
Honestly, at first, I wasnt sure which direction I was going to take with this track. I thought about maybe having it stay closer to the way that the original sounded (at least tonally, I guess).
After listening to several other peoples takes on this track, I was still stumped though. So (Bones and) I went and started up F-Zero to get some inspiration (a.k.a procrastinating for a while).
I then came to the conclusion that Rock + Racing is and will always be a winning combination. Plus I wanted the channels first F-Zero cover to be really rockin and high energy too!
So I just went at it and rocked out on this one. I really liked being able to throw in those little guitar wails like at 0:40 (been a little while since I last did those). Real simple thing to do, but always sounds cool!
I also decided to be a bit more conservative in regards to synth-use and anything else that wasnt the guitars. Theres a hammond organ playing along quietly in the background, as well as a synth part that does a little melody from White Land I (0:55). All in all, I wanted to keep the guitars the main focus on this one.

Man, this is such a pretty track!
I actually remember a couple of years ago (when I last did a Plutonia cover) how I had no idea how I was going to approach this track. Back then, I figured I would keep things fairly normal with a nice little HD orchestral rendition of this song. I went into it with that same mindset, but things took a surprisingly pleasant turn!
It started as soon as I swapped in a Moog-sounding synth to replace the synth strings of the original. Right then and there, I knew exactly what direction I wanted to take this! Perhaps I still havent gotten this retro sound completely out of my system, even after Metal Gears Zanzibar Breeze, and Duke3Ds Plasma... In any case, Im glad that Im still craving this particular sound!
This time I decided to take that sound a bit further. I was very particular about which sounds I used for this one. I even went and found some LinnDrum LM-1 samples in order to further invoke that 80s vibe. I also kept bits and pieces of the General MIDI Roland drums, since it felt pretty fitting with the sound I was shooting for.
After loading up my synths and A LOT of reverbs, things were shaping up pretty nicely... however I started to wonder if I should even try to add guitars to this. I wasnt sure how I would go about it... However, I started daydreaming and imagining what the lead guitar would sound like when it first comes into the song! I was very close to just saying Yeah, I think this ought to be enough. and starting the render for the master track. Though, the lead guitar part I kept hearing in my head kept nagging at me.
So I plugged in my guitar and started tinkering with my tone. Gotta have loads of delay, reverb, and chorus to bring out that 80s lead! Once I got the tone I wanted, I started recording the part. Something interesting about the leads from 2:00-2:26, is the fact that I think this is the first time Ive ever recorded a part where Ive switched and played through all three pickup positions on my Ibanez! Its such a subtle thing that would probably go largely unnoticed, but it was essential for keeping the leads sounding smooth on the higher notes.
I also changed up things for the rhythm guitar tone, since my usual tone wouldve been overpowering, and would have definitely clashed with the overall tone of the cover. I wound up loading one of my old favorite amp sims (Lepou Le456) and then ran it through some chorus.
Aside from that, I decided to get a little silly with chromatic aberration throughout the video, since thats like, mandatory for retrowave!... or something. I also had a bit of fun indulging my inner JJ Abrams with some light/lens flares in this video.

So this one was deliciously sinister and heavy!
Had fun adding new leads on top of the intro/outro bits. Also, the good ol DAR Scream samples make a return. Ironically enough, I think the last time I used them was towards the end of the previous Doom marathon!
Originally, I was just going to use my usual reversed and time-stretched scream. However, I decided to sample more pieces from the cover demo where those clips were originally from. Also got to experiment with coming up with a signal-chain for screamy stuff like that.
On the topic of things I havent used in a while: I also decided to throw in some Doom sound effects during the bridge bit. I dont think Ive done that since MAP30 from the DOOM 2 marathon.
A small little change I made was swapping out one of the choir parts with a string-section bit. Also during the sustained notes for the string section, I decided to have them doing some half-trills.
Anyhow, hope you all enjoy the cover, and I hope everyone is feeling hype as the end of the Plutonia marathon draws ever closer! ~DAR

HD Version of the cover! Also the first of the Wolfenstein Rising tracks to kickstart the Enhanced Soundtrack.
Technically I did a non-MIDI version of The Call of War back then, but I think I could redo that one to sound a lot better now. Pretty psyched about eventually giving the rest of the Wolfenstein Rising soundtrack a nice facelift!
Also, while I was working on this, I was really surprised to hear how much this reminded me of Return to Castle Wolfensteins soundtrack! Really has the same kind of vibe going on.
Anyhow, I hope you all enjoy this version of Plodding as well! Also thanks to Raees for sending over the Enhanced Soundtrack cover art! ~DAR

Time for an epic rock n roll intermission before we get to the big finale!
So first things first, I finally pulled the trigger and got a very nice and affordable 7-string guitar that Ive been eyeballing for at least 3 years now. Got to use it right away for the rhythm, chugga-chugga stuff going on here in this cover!
Now with that said, man, theres a lot packed into this 2-minute track! It felt very nostalgic for me because its been like forever ago when I covered E2M4 & E2M8 from DOOM 1. Wonderful mashup by Bucket, and oh boy, the leads! Ive been looking forward to this one. Its also been a long time since Ive gotten to do some really rock n roll sounding leads. I think the last time was a few years back when I did that Banzai Run medley.
Weve got synths, down-tuned chugga-chugga rhythm guitar, choirs and orchestra, rock n roll leads, and I even decided to throw in an organ during the middle of the track. I just kept hearing that rock organ in my head during that solo. Just felt nice and right to me since it boosts up that rockin and funky vibe going on there!
I opted for choirs during the E2M4 part, mainly to stick closer to that, and also because I brought back the choir sounds I used in my E2M8 cover.
Also, I changed up the rhythm guitar a bit, made it more chuggy and stuff while the leads are rocking out. Speaking of which, I DID wind up deviating from the original leads a bit, so its not 1-for-1. I think it still turned out quite nicely though!
I had fun with riffin and noodling around during the outro as well.
Also, I dont know if Bucket had intended for it, but the bit before it goes into the E2M4 part sounds very reminiscent of the title/menu theme for TNT Evilution. Due to that, I went and chucked in some saw synths to pay homage to TNTs title track.
