Advancing cancer treatment: The importance of microscopy in CAR-T cell therapy automation
Discover how OPTIMA pharma, Heidelberg University Hospital, the Robert Bosch Health Campus, and ZEISS are working together on “ProCell for Patient” – the first fully automated production facility for manufacturing cell-based therapeutics.
In this video, you’ll see how ProCell:
• Automates key steps in producing ATMPs, cell therapies, and gene therapies, traditionally done with intensive manual labor
• Integrates all required components into one compact machine – from blood product to final therapeutic product
• Uses an integrated ZEISS microscope for in process inspection, standardized workflows, and high image quality through autofocus and full 3D movement
• Enables cell morphology assessment, cell counting, and live/dead analysis via customer-specific software
• Helps dramatically reduce time and staffing requirements while improving consistency and quality
By relocating the ZEISS microscope under the work surface and outside the isolator to protect sensitive electronics, the project teams jointly explored new technical ground and defined what is possible for automated cell therapy manufacturing.
Together, we aim to set new standards in biopharmaceutical production and contribute to the fight against cancer.
