Don't undervalue the importance of having a log in the shop. I know, it's big, it's heavy, it's wood. It's also better than bad, it's good!
If you use this technique, you will find that it is not as difficult, dangerous, or as time consuming as it may first appear. I found after only around three passes that I could ride the backside of the blade guard against the rear fence, which kept my passes nice and straight. I also lowered the blade twice, so that I wasn't removing more material than I was comfortable with in each pass. You know you want one.
