Carole Malone just claimed on Jeremy Vine that young people on benefits have chosen unemployment as a “lifestyle.” The reality is far more complicated — and far more brutal.
In this video I break down exactly why so many young people are struggling to find work in 2026. From the sharp rise in 18-24 unemployment, to AI quietly removing entry-level roles, to the nightmare of applying for hundreds of jobs and hearing nothing back, the job market is stacked against them. Low pay, terrible conditions, jobs that are miles away, and the risk of being locked out of Universal Credit if a short-term job falls through all play a part.

I also look at the bigger picture: rising employment costs for businesses, fewer vacancies, and a benefits system that often treats jobseekers with suspicion rather than support. A small minority may not want to work — but the majority are trying and getting nowhere. Punching down at them from a comfortable media seat doesn’t help anyone.
