Searching the web does not provide us with a lot of answers as to the “real” identity of this orchestra (leader/conductor/arranger) and/or it’s leader.
Looking at the labels on which his recordings were made (mainly Polydor) everything points in the direction of a German bandleader; a German bandleader working somewhat “under cover” and it might well be possible that we know him (well) under another name or “alias”.
His work has been “combined” with recordings by Berry Lipman – another indicator that the recordings were made in Germany and inevitably we then think of Roberto Delgado aka as Horst Wende. But the orchestra playing here clearly does not sound like Delgado, so there must be some other fine musician who wrapped himself in a “latin dress” just for these recordings.
And, yes, if one searches a bit deeper, one finds several albums by Romanos, most of them on the Polydor label, but not all of them.
A mystery to be solved … so maybe someone of our subscribers knows “the true story” ??
One thing is definitely true : these guys here knew how to bring relaxing, softly latin sounding songs. This “Gentle on my mind” version is a pretty good example of that statement.
Anyway… let’s concentrate on the Music … that’s the most important part, no …. ;-) ?
