It seems to happen so often. A bunch of friends get a jam going at some guy’s house in Nederland, and next thing you know, they’re touring the country. Ever hear of a little ol’ string band called Yonder Mountain?
Add Caribou Mountain Collective to the list. The Nederland bluegrass quartet began informally at a pickin’ party a couple of years ago, but they got an official stamp of approval this summer when they won the RockyGrass band competition at Planet Bluegrass. Also this summer, the band released its first album, Til the Sun Gives Us A Day.
Caribou owes its success to well-blended instrumental talents, and they scored big with Miles Perry’s voice, which has a long-road-home tone to match the music’s twang. Perry writes great songs, too, as we got to hear in Caribou’s performance of “Lady Jane,” “Long Gone” and “If You Would’ve Heard Me Calling.”
The band, which includes Allen Cooke on dobro, Etienne Cremieux on fiddle and Curly Collins on bass, also had a wide-ranging chat with Quentin.
What they brought us: A garden gnome. It’s possible this was acquired illeg … uh, never mind.
