Owned by Marguerite and Barry Leitch of Invercargill, this Formula Atlantic car has a remarkable racing history. Originally purchased by Bob Jane for the Australian Grand Prix, it was driven to 3rd place by Geoff Brabham in 1981 and 2nd place by Jacques Laffite in 1982.
The car was later acquired by New Zealand racing legend Ken Smith, who won two New Zealand Gold Star championships with it.
After changing hands several times, the car suffered significant damage and was found in extremely poor condition when purchased by the Leitchs in 2001. Extensive research of chassis and build numbers confirmed it was the former Laffite Grand Prix car.
A meticulous restoration by Leitch Motorsport & Restoration aimed to preserve as much of the original vehicle as possible. Rather than creating a like-new car, the team restored it to reflect its appearance during the 1982 Australian Grand Prix, retaining its authentic character and history.
