Originally owned by 1971 New Zealand Beach Racing and 1983 OSCA Champion Rod McElrea, this RX7 was his much-loved club car for nearly 20 years. Campaigned in rally sprints, track days and car club events around Canterbury, it even ran a nitrous kit — and Rod, well into his 70s, was known to spin the wheels in 4th down Ruapuna’s front straight. He also shared countless hot laps with his grandsons, including future IMSA driver Hunter McElrea.
In 2024 the car was restored by Andy Duffin and 3 Rotor Restorations into a Group C replica, retaining its original engine and interior while upgrading the suspension and running gear. Now back in its signature yellow, the RX7 stands as a tribute to Rod’s legacy and lifelong passion for South Island motorsport.
