Light of a Clear Blue Morning is my tribute to Dolly Parton and to a song that has always carried such a beautiful sense of hope, resilience, and possibility.
For this trowel painting, I was inspired by the feeling of morning light breaking through the treetops in the mountains of East Tennessee—the landscape that shaped Dolly and so much of her music.
I wasn’t trying to paint a literal forest. Instead, I wanted to capture the feeling of standing beneath those trees as the morning begins: cool blues, flashes of green, bits of gold, and light filtering through everything.
Using layers of acrylic paint and a trowel, I allowed the vertical movement of the paint to suggest trees, atmosphere, distance, and those shafts of light finding their way through the canopy.
Dolly Parton gave the world an extraordinary amount of music, laughter, generosity, and joy. This painting is simply my small way of saying thank you.
And perhaps that’s one of the things I love most about making art. Sometimes we paint to experiment. Sometimes we paint to learn. And sometimes we paint because we want to remember how something—or someone—made us feel.
This one is for Dolly, and for everyone who loved her.
