Every August here in Sydney, Nova Scotia, there is a huge motorcycle rally. It's like rolling thunder as motorcyclists from all over hit the roads. I've always loved motorcycles so I had to go check the event out, particularly since this year it was nearly cancelled due to lack of funding...
Since the first days of the original Pedaling Prince's Podium I've been using iMovie 8.0.6. However, two days ago I updated to iMovie 10.0.4; this is the first episode of Podium HD to be edited on it. It slows my computer down to a crawl, but the extremely powerful editing and audio tools are worth it. :)
It still needs some work, though, particularly when it comes to its audio tools.
For one thing, there's no way to see the audio level of the entire soundtrack's mixdown or to export the audio in uncompressed form for detailed editing in GarageBand. So basically there was no way to get the sound into GarageBand for editing without degrading the quality.
So, for this video I decided to try a little experiment: I mixed and edited the sound entirely within iMovie. Thanks to iMovie's audio "keyframes" it's possible to automate levels of different sound elements, and the limited preset-based equalizer was useful for dealing with wind noise so I think it came out reasonably well.
The only part of this soundtrack produced in GarageBand was my brief voiceover; I wanted to do EQ and gentle compression on it so I normalized it in Audacity and imported it into GarageBand for the EQ work. Then, after polishing it again in Audacity, I dropped the resulting AIFF audio file into the iMovie timeline. ;)
I must say, if they could add just a few more features to the audio capabilities of iMovie it might actually be possible to do my soundtracks in it regularly. That'd be nice since it would save me the step of transferring the audio into GrarageBand. :)
