I decided to take one last try with a AA battery and the cap bank. A lead was soldered to the negative of this dead alkaline AA cell. The end was then insulated with epoxy to try to prevent the discharge from simply arcing across rather than going through the battery. The 70 uF bank was charged to 6400 V and dumped into this AA battery.
