The thirteenth century monarch of the unified Castile and Leon, Alfonso X earned the sobriquet "el Sabio" (Alfonso the Wise, or the Learned) for his vast erudition and cultural sophistication. He endowed university chairs, including one in music. He first adopted the Castilian language for all court records, and wrote learned treatises on law, astronomy, and the history of the world. He both composed lyric poetry in Galician Portuguese and made his court a haven for poets. Not only did troubadours and trouveres pass through his lands in the retinue of their traveling masters, some spent long periods in his court -- especially as a refuge during the Albigensian Crusade. Over the span of many years, Alfonso composed, compiled, and arranged a massive collection of poetry and music in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Cantigas de Santa Maria. The volume is an enduring testament to his devotion and skill.

The Cantigas de Santa Maria contains more than 400 Galician songs, many of which must have come from Alfonso's pen. Many contemporaries credit him with the making or finding of songs to the Virgin, and several individual pieces in the collection speak in the first person (notably the first Prologue song, and numbers 357, 400, and 401). Alfonso also gave the collection its rigorous and systematic structure. Throughout the collection, nine songs about the Virgin's miraculous intercession (cantigas de miragres) are followed by a single general song in praise of Her (cantigas de loor); the enormous collection thus reads just like the "decades" of the Marian Rosary prayers. The poetry most commonly follows a refrain form (A bba A bba A, the foundation of the later French virelai and the Italian ballata and lauda). Its texts portray the Virgin's grace and assistance to innumerable medieval folk in all walks of life: clergy, pilgrims, nobles, warriors, craftsmen, wives, and husbands. Musically, each poem arrives in the guise of a simple modal melody. Dorian and mixolydian modes predominate, and both triple and duple mensural meters appear. The melodies are simple and often completely syllabic, with clear cadences and phrase structures reminiscent of popular dances. The sumptuous miniatures illustrating the texts in several manuscript editions of the Cantigas yield precious clues to their performance: many show individuals and groups singing to the accompaniment of a bewildering variety of over 40 types of musical instruments. These images document the rich musical life of his court.
