Many thanks to my public library @bcplonline for hooking me up with this book, and to Kevin Hazzard for writing it! "American Sirens: The Incredible Story of the Black Men who Became America's First Paramedics" chronicles the history of modern EMS and its development in (you guessed it!) Pittsburgh. There's also a decent amount of overlap with Baltimore for my fellow Marylanders :D
I can't believe more people don't know about this part of our history! There is apparently an exhibit on Freedom House at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh (also home of the Neighborhood of Make-Believe set!), and I am definitely planning to check it out when I visit Pittsburgh sometime.
