Continuing this weeks theme of lesser know Abney Park songs, I’m now playing you “Can’t Talk About It”. In terms of just prettiness, the might be the most beautiful song I’ve ever written. The melody, the blend of instruments, the blend of mine and Jody's voice on this song…it is all just wonderful.
As many of you know, I don’t just write steampunk. This band is my whole music career, and since I plan to do it “Until The Day I Die” occasionally you guys have to listen to my off-palette appreciations of other music. Here I’m pretty much just doing americana, which I’ve done in songs like Bad Things Coming, and Space Cowboy, although this particular song is more melodic and romantic. I gotta say rehearing this after so many years, I feel we really nailed the style.
One of the reasons this song got “lost” is because of how personal it is. I had gotten into a big fight with my wife, one of those terrible, heart ripping fights were everybody says all the worst things they can think of, and the pain doesn’t go away for a long time. Every married couple eventually have these fights, and all they realy mean is how emotionally invested you are with each other. I locked myself in the studio that night, in order to keep the fight from going on and on. There wrote this song. The “can’t talk about it” chorus is referring to the fact that when you are married, your family is her family, and your friends are her friends. So when you need to vent, you’d be venting to people who can’t really pick sides. So you just have to keep things to yourself. Meanwhile, going off and seeking the company of strangers is going to be VERY bad, so you just remain sad, lonely, and can’t do a thing about it.
Which is where song writing comes in (or whatever art you create). You feel terrible, you bleed out your emotions into your art, and then you are left with a new emotion. Now your excited as to how great your work came out, and are longer thinking about the horrible things you have just been through.
