Having a hard time finding a Raspberry Pi in stock? Need something with enough power for Home Assistant and some addons? Check out this used Thin Client for $35 (SHIPPED!), and the process to get a Home Assistant image up and running on it. Home Assistant doesn't include an installer, so we have to creatively image the internal SSD by first booting to a live Linux image.

There is no corresponding blog post, but you may find my thin client selection blog to be useful:

Before you choose your thin client, be sure to check the model and specs, as well as what's included. Things to watch out for:
* Does it have a power adapter?
* Is the solid state drive included, and is it big enough for Home Assistant?
* Does it have a halfway decent processor?

I selected a Dell WYSE 5060 since it was the cheapest available with the power adapter and an SSD included at the time. It's on par performance-wise with a few year old budget laptop, featuring a quad core AMD embedded processor, 4G of RAM, and 16G SSD in this configuration. Not great by modern gaming desktop standards, but definitely better than even a good Pi. I wouldn't want to run Windows on it, but Home Assistant is much easier on the system requirements.

Affiliate links to some eBay searches to help you get started:
Dell Wyse 5060 (my favorite) - ebay.us/HDNfVY
Dell Wyse 3040 (less powerful, smaller) - ebay.us/bRjuLg
The 3040 is adequate to run HA and Z-wave/Zigbee, but not more demanding addons like Frigate. It's very small and has very low power consumption, so it's a good choice for a basic HA setup. For some guidance on BIOS configuration of the 3040, see this other video of mine: youtu.be/6Ls7xn4qdlk
