Repair Project #10 - Canon XF-305
Welcome to a quick repair project! I'm going over the backstory in the intro a bit, but just to have a bit of clarification in text form too:
I do these repair and restoration videos as a hobby and hopefully will be able to make some money of it eventually in one shape or the other. But what kept bugging me all the time was the lack of decent video camera in my "studio". For the originally planned 720p output, the cheap-ish camcorders I had were fine, but when I decided to up the game a bit by doing regular videos and also qualifying for YouTube ad money (yea, all 25$ per month or so) I wanted to go for proper 1080p full HD at least. 4k seems excessive and over the top costly for just a little benefit to me, so unless memory and storage gets a 90% price cut, I doubt I'd go there. But still: you need a rather good optical system in your camera to get decent 1080 footage out of it. Most consumer grade cameras lack in that department and so filming in 1080 and prsenting in 1080 gives no head room for fixing by "oversampling".
Being a canon cat for my whole life, I wanted to use one of their cameras... but ouch: those are really pricy! And so a saved e-bay search and a few months later, a decent offer came along: a three-digit price tag for a Canon XF-305 camera. With the runner up still asking close to 2000 and a new one well beyond 3000, I thought this is the time to get it. When it arrived, it did show signs of use and abuse - naturally - professional gear goes through a lot during the day. There's a cover flap missing for the headphone jack section for example, the paint is rubbed off in a few spots... minor cosmetics really. What bugged me much much more was the microphone mount. It came with the camera alright, but the screws wouldn't stay in: the thread was stripped out and I had to fix that. Now, opening up that 900€ piece of equipment I wanted to use was making me a bit nervous for obvious reasons... that's still a lot of money and saving up after all!
