Like countless counterparts who grew up toggling between sacred music and worldlier material, *Canzetta Maria "Candi" Staton* knows her way around a choir loft and a commercial setting. In girlhood, the future five-time Grammy nominee sang in church in her hometown of Hanceville, Alabama. Starting in middle school she and her sister, Maggie, and Naomi Harrison, performing as the Jewell Gospel Trio, built a ten-year career, often touring with the Rev. C.L. Franklin, the Soul Stirrers, and other stars of the sacred stage. The trio disbanded in 1963. Staton, now going by “Candi,” steered herself in a showbizzier direction. A 1968 introduction by fellow artist Clarence Carter to FAME Studios producer Rick Hall led to a string of 16 R&B and soul hits, including genre-bending covers of country singer Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” and the Elvis Presley warhorses “In the Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds.” Staton’s reliably robust vocals and extremely high-energy live performances kept her on the charts for decades as she adapted to popular taste and evolving styles. Her 1976 disco single “Young Hearts Run Free” dominated the airwaves all through the American bicentennial summer as well as the airwaves of the British isles. In 1982 Staton reconnected with her gospel roots, which would become a second home that she still inhabits. Of the 30 LPs, a dozen explore aspects of gospel, including two Grammy nominees and a passel of numbers especially popular in Britain. Staton and her husband Henry Hooper currently reside in Atlanta, Georgia. —Michael Dolan
