The forestry method shown in this video is selection cutting. This means that only some of the trees are harvested. First, you find a suitable forest stand, which should be a forest with trees of varying ages and species. Rough roads are created in a herringbone pattern: one wider trail in the middle and narrower trails out towards the sides. Trees are cut every 20 to 30 years, and then only the largest and medium-sized trees are cut, approximately 20 to 30 percent of the volume. The smaller trees remain untouched, so that they may continue to grow in the gaps which are created. In this manner, you maintain a forest which always looks the same.
Selection cutting is principally a thinning which allows the forest to remain unevenly-aged and eliminating the need to replant any new trees. You will not enjoy this video if you hike, backpack, trek, paddle, kayak, climb, pedal, wilderness camp, or love it all!
