This Fine Art Friday, I am revealing the next province/territory I am paying tribute to in my Canadian Art Project. This is a series of 13 portraits in which I try to convey the beautiful and diverse landscape of Canada, while capturing the strength and multicultural spirit of the woman who call it home. I will be doing one for each province and territory and will feature the provincial flower and bird for each area, along with other notable landmarks/qualities. Today I will be describing my portrait for the province of Alberta.
Alberta is Canada's largest oil producing province. Leduc No. 1 was a major crude oil discovery on February 13, 1947. A test drill sent massive amounts of oil and gas spewing into the air in the form of a geyser. The discovery transformed the Alberta economy and allowed Canada it become self-sufficient within a decade, as well as a major exporter of oil.
Albert is also home to the richest source of dinosaur fossils in the world! In fact, Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site 2 hours east of Calgary. 58 species of dinosaur have been found there and over 500 specimens have been sent to museums worldwide.
Banff National Park (and Lake Louise) is noted for its beautiful turquoise lakes, mountains, skiing, hiking, and breathtaking scenery. It is Canada's oldest National Park.
Alberta's national bird is the Great Horned Owl and the wild rose is the provincial flower.
The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival, held every July. The 10 day event is called "The Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth" and attracts over one million visitors each year. In 2008, it was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Unfortunately is was cancelled this year due to Covid-19.
I will be taking a bit of a break from this series as it is a very personal art project for me and I am feeling a bit rushed having to produce one every week. Not to worry, there will be more coming soon! Please check out the playlist to see what provinces/territories I have covered so far.
