Many learners mix up the past simple and the present perfect when they use last year.

āŒ Incorrect
I’ve been to Paris last year.
āœ… Correct options
I went to Paris last year.

I’ve been to Paris.
I’ve been to Paris before.

🧠 Why this matters
Last year = a finished time in the past
So we use the past simple.

I went to Paris last year. This talks about a specific moment in time.
I’ve been to Paris / I’ve been to Paris before - this just means the experience happened at some point in your life.

The exact time is not important.

āœļø Your turn
Write one sentence using last year in the comments.
