The climate crisis is a key driver of increasing global hunger levels. Current humanitarian needs will seem small compared to the potential rise if the world fails to put out this fire and tackle climate change.
Vulnerable countries and communities are already suffering severe loss of and damage to lives, livelihoods and harvests caused by more frequent and severe climate events such as cyclones, floods and droughts. These communities contributed the least to the climate crisis but are now bearing the worst impacts with extremely limited means to cushion the blows.
In 2020, extreme weather contributed to most of the world’s food crises and was the primary cause of acute food insecurity in 15 countries.
When climate extremes meet conflict, the crisis magnifies as seen in countries in the Sahel, South Sudan, Yemen and Afghanistan, which are part of a ring of instability stretching around the earth.
Climate extremes exacerbate conflicts as people compete for scarce resources and drive displacement and social tensions. In 2020, climate extremes internally displaced 30 million people globally – three times more than conflict.
