Can you feel it? Fall is in the air.
A hint of yellow is starting to show in the cottonwoods and willows. The deep greens of summer are beginning to shift, the evenings are getting cooler, and I’ve been listening to elk bugle for more than a week now.
September is what we often call locals’ season in Jackson Hole. The summer crowds begin to thin, wildlife becomes more visible, and the valley settles into a quieter rhythm as the rut begins.
Tonight’s walk along Emily’s Pond and the Snake River dike felt like the perfect entrée to what I think is the prettiest season of the year.
There’s also a wonderful Jackson Hole story behind this place. What was once a gravel quarry, dump and rifle range was reclaimed as wildlife habitat by Emily Stevens. In 1992, she gave these 11 acres to the people of Teton County and protected them with a conservation easement, with the goal of ensuring permanent public access to the Snake River.
More than three decades later, we’re still walking these trails, watching the seasons change and enjoying what Emily called “one of the greatest treasures of this valley.”
That’s the lasting power of conservation.
