You’re looking at Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Park in northern Saskatchewan, even though it looks like it could pass for somewhere in the Sahara Desert. The park has the most northerly active sand dune formations on Earth. #TheNatureOfThings #WildCanadianYear #shorts

Sun reflects off the exposed sand, creating hot air updrafts that suck in cooler air from over Lake Athabasca. The result? Strong winds that sculpt the sand into huge dunes that slowly migrate over the years into the surrounding forest.

(Fun fact: the cinematographers who shot this had to hike for over 10 hours to get to some of the biggest dunes in the park, since it’s a remote wilderness area with no trails and no vehicle access)
