Can You Beat Plague Inc Without Spending Any DNA Points? (in text form)
Let me start off by saying I don’t mean “beat” in the sense that you might be thinking. I’m not going to eliminate all life on earth with every type of disease and every scenario the developers have added. All I want to do is make the person race extinct one time, with any kind of disease, without spending any DNA Points.
I started with a Bacteria with a default name and postponed the challenge because, despite what I just said, my goal was to do this with a virus to be as true-to-life as possible. I don’t see this as cheating but if you do, go ahead and dislike the video guilt-free. But this is a good thing, I can use this to explain a few details about this game for those who’ve never played it, because they’re all relevant. There are 3 big factors that determine how your disease performs: Transmission, Symptoms, and Abilities. They’re probably what you’d expect. Transmission dictates how much your disease can spread. With the right mutations, all your favorite barnyard creatures can be ticking time bombs just waiting to be unleashed on farmer Dan. Finally his life can end. He hasn’t been happy since his wife ended and his only child moved away and his farm isn’t giving what it used to. Be happy for Dan’s end. He is.
Symptoms are self explanatory. Things like coughing or pneumonia or vomiting are activated from within that panel. You might want to go all-in on the most severe and lethal symptoms first, but the more severe the symptoms, the more attention your disease will get and the more people will be working towards a remedy. Abilities are how well your disease adapts to different environments and how it reacts to attempted treatment. There are also Genes that can be modified to give small buffs to your disease, which are unlocked by playing.
I’ll tell you now that I lost easily with the bacteria the first time, I was playing as you normally would but I am not good at this. The general strategy you’ll want to employ is to infect as many people as possible with as few symptoms as possible. As the late, great, video donkey once said: “you can’t hit what you can’t see”. And that applies here. Fake News Scientists can’t treat a disease if they don’t know it exists and they won’t know it exists because we won’t tell them. And those that might learn of it will keep their mouth close, because of the implication.
The bacteria doesn’t matter anymore, I wanted to unlock the Virus, I won with the Bacteria and got what I was after. And that brings us to the main event, the virus. Named, of course, after everyone’s favorite grandmother. So, there’s one big thing working to our advantage with the Sparkle-1, and that’s the way viruses work in Plague Inc. Every type of disease has its unique quirks and features that contribute to its Doug score. What makes the Virus unique is that it is more likely to randomly mutate. This random mutation is the only way to increase the infectivity of a virus. Without spending DNA points, you’re effectively just an observer. You will do nothing because you can do nothing. Grandma Sparkle is a virus of despair, monotony, and sheer luck.
What this means is that there is almost no strategy at play here. I failed a lot, my beautiful microscopic ending machine was beaten to end by the man more times than I can count. That’s a lie I literally counted the number of failures in the name of the virus. The point being that you’re going to see gameplay from different simulations, everything I’m saying applies to them all.
